The White House has described India as one of the United States’ strongest allies, saying the relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump has helped strengthen bilateral ties.
White House spokesperson Anna Kelly made the remarks on Wednesday in response to a question from IANS about PM Modi’s 25 years in public life and his relationship with Trump.
“India is one of the United States’ strongest allies,” Kelly said, adding that the partnership had been strengthened by Trump’s “good relationship” with PM Modi.
The statement came as PM Modi completed 25 years in public office on October 7, marking a quarter-century since he first assumed office as Gujarat Chief Minister in 2001. He served as Chief Minister until May 2014 before becoming Prime Minister following the Bharatiya Janata Party’s victory in the Lok Sabha elections.
The White House’s remarks placed particular emphasis on the personal rapport between PM Modi and Trump, even as India and the US continue to navigate differences over trade and other policy matters. The statement, however, did not announce any new bilateral initiative or policy decision.
India and the US have expanded cooperation in defence, technology, trade and strategic affairs under successive administrations. The two countries, however, do not have a formal mutual defence treaty.
PM Modi’s tenure has expanded India’s global engagement and strengthened ties with major powers. Leaders worldwide congratulated him on completing 25 years in public office, while Modi thanked them and pledged to deepen international cooperation.
