The US Supreme Court on Saturday approved the extradition of Tahawwur Rana, a key accused in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, to India. The court dismissed Rana’s petition challenging his extradition, marking a crucial development in the long-running legal battle.
Court Dismisses Rana’s Extradition Appeal
Tahawwur Rana, a Canadian national of Pakistani origin, had been fighting against his extradition to India for several years. He faces numerous criminal charges related to the 26/11 attacks, which killed 166 people, including six US citizens.
On January 21, the US Supreme Court rejected Rana’s petition for a writ of certiorari, effectively clearing the way for his extradition to India.
The ruling followed a series of unsuccessful legal challenges by Rana in both federal and lower courts, ultimately leading to this decision. US Solicitor General Elizabeth B. Prelogar had recommended rejecting Rana’s petition.
Extradition Marks A Milestone For Justice
The court’s decision means Rana has exhausted all legal options, allowing India to hold him accountable for his role in the Mumbai attacks.
Currently detained at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles, Rana closely associates with David Coleman Headley, a Pakistani-American Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist who played a pivotal role in planning the attacks.
Headley, who turned approver in the case, is serving a 35-year prison sentence in the US for his involvement.
India’s Pursuit Of Justice For 26/11 Victims
India has long sought Rana’s extradition to bring him to trial for his involvement in the devastating terror attack on Mumbai in November 2008.
The attacks targeted several iconic locations in Mumbai, making them some of the deadliest in India’s history. The terror group Lashkar-e-Taiba, based in Pakistan, orchestrated the attacks.
Rana’s extradition is a significant step in seeking justice for the victims of the attacks. India now anticipates holding him accountable for his role in one of the deadliest terrorist attacks.
