On Friday, Ukraine’s government ordered all ministries and regional bodies to turn off air conditioning and external lighting after Russian bombardments caused widespread blackouts.

Following Russian strikes on Ukraine’s power system, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal emphasized the importance of lowering power use and preserving as much electricity as possible.

At a government meeting, Shmyhal said, “Due to the Russian attacks, we have a significant deficit in the energy system. To improve the situation, we restore and expand generation and simultaneously reduce consumption”.

“We approved the government’s order to reduce electricity consumption by all state authorities. Ministries, central institutions, and regional administrations should stop using air conditioners and external lighting of buildings and nearby areas”, Shmyhal continued.

Temperatures in Ukraine are currently 25 degrees Celsius (77 degrees Fahrenheit) and may rise to 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) in July and August.

Shmyhal went on to say that the government recommended similar measures for law enforcement institutions and judicial officials.

The Prime Minister asked firms to reduce their usage of air conditioning and other energy-intensive equipment to the greatest extent possible.
