At least three people were killed when two trains collided on Friday on Java, the main island of Indonesia, according to officials. Several carriages buckled and overturned as a result of the collision.
The accident occurred approximately 500 meters (yards) from the Cicalengka train station in Bandung, West Java, according to Ayep Hanapi, a spokesman for the national railroads, PT Kereta Api Indonesia.
According to him, a commuter train from Cicalengka station to Padalarang was struck by the Turangga express train on its route from Surabaya, the provincial capital of East Java, to Bandung.
Ibrahim Tompo, a spokesman for the West Java Police, said that at least three persons had died and several others were injured.
Several carriages were either overturned or severely damaged. A nearby rice field was struck by one of the carriages. As terrified passengers attempted to exit the train, they screamed. While ambulances evacuated the injured, some people strolled through the fields with suitcases and other belongings.
54 people on the Turangga and about 106 on the commuter train have been rescued, according to Hery Marantika, the director of Bandung’s Search and Rescue Agency. The reason behind the accident is being investigated.
Due to Indonesia’s dilapidated railroad network, train accidents are frequent and mainly at crossings.
