Trump Announces 90-Day Talks With Mexico To Finalise Trade Deal; Tariffs Delayed

US President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will engage in discussions with Mexico over the next 90 days, aiming to finalise a trade agreement.

Trump shared the update via a post on Truth Social following a telephone conversation with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum on Thursday, according to Xinhua news agency.

“We have agreed to extend, for a 90-day period, the exact same Deal as we had for the last short period of time,” Trump wrote on the platform.

He further added, “We will be talking to Mexico over the next 90 Days with the goal of signing a Trade Deal somewhere within the 90 Day period of time, or longer.”

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also took to the social media platform, describing the discussion as constructive.

“We had a very good call with the President of the United States, Donald Trump. We avoided the increase in tariffs announced for tomorrow and achieved 90 days to build a long-term agreement based on dialogue,” she posted on X.

Trump acknowledged the particular challenges of crafting a deal with Mexico due to their shared border.

“We are getting to know and understand each other more and more,” he asserted.

On 12 July, Trump had posted a letter on Truth Social warning that tariffs of 30 per cent on Mexican goods would come into effect from 1 August.

Earlier in July 2025, Mexico criticised the proposed tariffs as unjust.

Mexico Pushes Back; Urges Permanent Dialogue

The Mexican government stated that both nations had initiated official negotiations through a permanent bilateral working group.

A joint statement from Mexico’s foreign affairs and economy ministries confirmed that a high-level meeting took place in Washington between Mexican and US officials, during which the US indicated that the new tariffs were scheduled to begin on 1 August.

“We stated clearly that we believe this is unfair and that we do not agree,” the ministries said.

To safeguard industries and employment on both sides of the border, the two governments agreed to establish a permanent bilateral mechanism to address core issues in their relationship and explore alternative measures to avoid the imposition of tariffs, the statement concluded.
