Mohamed Muizzu
The parliamentary election held in the Maldives on Sunday saw President Mohamed Muizzu’s ruling coalition taking a convincing lead, potentially adding strain to India’s relations with the Indian Ocean archipelago. Muizzu’s People’s National Congress (PNC) was reported to be leading in 59 out of 93 parliamentary seats, indicating a significant advantage over the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), which had previously pursued an “India First” policy.
With the Maldives Development Alliance, the Jumhooree Party, and independent candidates also leading in several constituencies, the PNC appeared poised for a comfortable majority in Parliament. This outcome could further solidify Muizzu’s government agenda, including plans to realign the Maldives’ foreign policy towards China and reduce reliance on India for various sectors, such as food security and healthcare.
Muizzu’s campaign framed the parliamentary election as a referendum on his government’s policies, aiming to secure majority support to swiftly implement his presidential campaign promises. One notable pledge was the intention to send back Indian military personnel stationed in the Maldives, who were primarily involved in operating helicopters and an aircraft for humanitarian and medical purposes.

Since assuming office, Muizzu has taken steps to pivot the Maldives towards China, including signing contracts with other countries for food and pharmaceutical supplies, reducing reliance on India in these areas. This shift has led to the withdrawal of Indian military personnel, with all personnel scheduled to leave by May 10, to be replaced by civilian experts.
The election results signal a potential continuation of Muizzu’s policies, which may further strain India-Maldives relations, already under pressure due to the Maldives’ alignment with Beijing.
