Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has strongly criticized reports suggesting that the US plans to impose sanctions on the Netzah Yehuda battalion of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). Allegedly, these sanctions stem from purported human rights violations committed by the battalion’s soldiers against Palestinians in the West Bank. The Netzah Yehuda battalion, highly regarded within the IDF, faces potential blacklisting by the Biden administration.

Netanyahu vehemently opposed the notion of sanctioning the IDF, emphasizing the vital role of Israeli soldiers in combating terrorism. Describing the potential sanctions as absurd and morally reprehensible, he condemned them as a nadir of morality. Joining him in condemnation, Israeli ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich echoed similar sentiments. Ben Gvir labeled the imposition of sanctions on Israeli soldiers as a “red line” and urged Defense Minister Yoav Gallant not to yield to American pressure.

Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich took to social media to express his vehement opposition to the US’s reported plans. He characterized the move to sanction the IDF battalion amid Israel’s existential struggle as sheer madness. Smotrich argued that such actions were part of a concerted effort to coerce Israel into accepting the establishment of a Palestinian state at the expense of its security.
