Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Port of Spain on 4 July, marking his first official visit to Trinidad & Tobago as Prime Minister and the first Indian bilateral visit to the nation at this level since 1999.
Upon arrival, PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome, with traditional music, drum beats, and vibrant cultural performances that reflected the unique Indo-Caribbean heritage of the country.
PM Modi shared his appreciation for the deep-rooted ties between India and Trinidad & Tobago, particularly the connection with eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
“A cultural connect like no other! Very happy to have witnessed a Bhojpuri Chautaal performance in Port of Spain,” he posted on social media platform X.
He also posted images of the warm welcome and wrote, “May the friendship between India and Trinidad & Tobago continue to scale new heights in the times to come!”
At the airport and later at his hotel, PM Modi interacted with enthusiastic members of the Indian diaspora, who greeted him with chants of ‘Bharat Mata Ki Jai’ and ‘Modi, Modi’.
He thanked the local community for their heartfelt reception and acknowledged the diaspora’s contributions across various sectors in Trinidad & Tobago.
“Many people from India made their way to Trinidad & Tobago years ago. Over the years, they distinguished themselves in several fields and are enriching the country’s development journey while retaining a strong cultural connection with India,” he wrote.
PM Modi also met Shankar Ramjattan, Nicholas Maraj, and Vince Mahato — winners of the Bharat Ko Janiye (Know India) Quiz.
Praising the initiative, he said the quiz has deepened the diaspora’s engagement with their roots and strengthened India’s global cultural outreach.
During this visit, PM Modi will hold talks with President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to enhance cooperation across sectors, including digital public infrastructure, energy, education, and cultural exchange.
He is also scheduled to address a Joint Session of the Trinidad & Tobago Parliament — a symbolic gesture reflecting shared democratic traditions.
This visit follows PM Modi’s stop in Ghana and precedes further engagements in Argentina, Brazil, and Namibia.
The ongoing tour reflects India’s commitment to strengthening partnerships in the Global South and highlights the enduring bonds between India and the Caribbean region.
