PM Modi Meets Students In Trinidad & Tobago; Strengthens Cultural Ties

Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Port of Spain, Trinidad & Tobago, on 4 July as part of his ongoing five-nation tour.

Upon arrival, he received a warm ceremonial welcome and was greeted enthusiastically by the local Indian community, which constitutes nearly 40–45% of the country’s population.

PM Modi expressed gratitude for the warm reception, calling it a testament to the strong cultural and ancestral bonds between the two nations.

Meeting ‘Bharat Ko Janiye’ quiz winners

As part of his engagements, PM Modi met with three Indian-origin youth — Shankar Ramjattan, Nicholas Maraj, and Vince Mahato — winners of the ‘Bharat Ko Janiye’ (Know India) Quiz.

This initiative, aimed at enhancing the global diaspora’s understanding of India, has fostered deepened connections with young Indians worldwide.

Sharing a post on X, the Prime Minister praised their enthusiasm and expressed hope that such programmes would continue to bridge the gap between India and its global diaspora.

Celebrating 180 years of Indian presence

This visit comes during Trinidad & Tobago’s commemoration of 180 years since the arrival of Indian immigrants.

PM Modi highlighted the vital role the Indian community has played in the development of T&T across various sectors while maintaining their rich Indian heritage.

The Prime Minister’s Office posted, “The Indian community in Trinidad & Tobago extended a warm welcome to PM @narendramodi. Their enthusiasm reflected the deep-rooted cultural ties and shared heritage between the two nations.”

Bilateral talks & strategic cooperation

This is PM Modi’s first visit to Trinidad & Tobago as Prime Minister and the first bilateral Indian PM visit to the nation since 1999.

He will hold discussions with President Christine Carla Kangaloo and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar — both of whom proudly trace their Indian ancestry — to strengthen cooperation in areas such as digital public infrastructure, pharmaceuticals, renewable energy, education, and cultural exchange.

During the visit, PM Modi will also address a joint session of the Trinidad & Tobago Parliament.

India notably gifted the Speaker’s chair in the Parliament — a powerful symbol of the shared democratic values and traditions between the two nations.

Through his address, PM Modi aims to reaffirm India’s commitment to deepening ties with the Caribbean and to promote stronger regional cooperation.

This is PM Modi’s second visit to the Caribbean in under a year, underscoring India’s growing engagement with the region and CARICOM.

With ongoing initiatives and high-level dialogues, the visit further aims to revitalise cultural and economic relations and celebrate the enduring bond between India and the Indian diaspora abroad.
