Justin Trudeau announced on Monday that he will resign as Canada’s Prime Minister and leader of the Liberal Party after his party chooses a new leader. Trudeau, who has led the Liberals since 2013 and served as PM for over nine years, made the announcement at a press conference in Ottawa.
“I intend to resign as party leader and as prime minister after the party selects a new leader,” Trudeau said, adding that he made the decision after reflecting during the holidays. The Liberal caucus is set to meet on Wednesday.
Trudeau’s resignation comes amid a revolt within his party and plummeting public opinion polls ahead of this year’s general elections. His position weakened further after Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland resigned abruptly in December, criticizing his leadership.
Additionally, Jagmeet Singh’s New Democratic Party (NDP) withdrew support from Trudeau’s minority government in September 2024. Singh accused the Liberals of failing Canadians, leaving the government vulnerable during an election year.
Trudeau’s decision to prorogue Parliament until March 24 highlights the challenges his government faces. Economic troubles have eroded public trust, with recent polls suggesting the Conservatives are likely to win decisively in the upcoming elections.
Trudeau first took over the Liberal Party during a low point in 2013, steering it to victory in 2015. His departure marks a major political shift, leaving the Liberals without a permanent leader in a critical election year.
