Hostages

The Israeli military has begun giving money and safety to anyone who can provide precise information on the whereabouts of hostages held by the insurgent group Hamas.

The leaflets were discovered on the streets of Gaza on Tuesday after being dropped from Israeli planes, the latest in a series of actions taken by Israel to locate some of the Palestinians held captive by Hamas.

“If you want to live in peace and give your children a better future, do the humanitarian deed immediately and share verified and valuable information about hostages being held in your area”, reads the leaflets distributed by the Israel Defense Forces.

It went on to say, “The Israeli military assures you that it will invest maximum effort in providing security for you and your home, and you will receive a financial reward. We guarantee you complete confidentiality”.

More than two weeks after Hamas struck and killed over 1,400 Israelis, there are mounting calls within Israel to reconsider the extent of a ground assault that was due any day. One of the key worries that has so far held back the land incursion is the fate of the captives, who are estimated to number approximately 200 and include several dozen dead.

Hamas, which is recognized as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union, has so far released four hostages, including two elderly persons released on Monday thanks to Qatar’s assistance.
