Israel accused Hamas Saturday of planning an attack on its embassy in Sweden as part of the Palestinian group’s expansion into Europe, where authorities reported the arrests of numerous members last month.

In a statement following the arrests made by Danish, German, and Swedish police, Israel’s Mossad intelligence service mentioned an accused Hamas network member in Sweden without saying whether he was also detained.

Hamas did not respond immediately, despite previously stating that it aimed to limit attacks on Israel, the occupied West Bank, and the Gaza Strip, all of which it seeks to establish a Palestinian state.

The Foreign Ministry in Stockholm declined to comment on the specific security of Israel’s embassy but stated that Sweden takes its commitments under the Vienna Convention to protect foreign missions very seriously.

According to the Mossad statement, a multi-national investigation received information that the Hamas network accepted orders from a group command post in Lebanon and had intent to attack the Israeli embassy in Sweden, procure paragliders, and activate members of criminal groups in Europe.

Hamas utilized paragliders as part of its unexpected multi-pronged attack on Israel on October 7, sparking the Gaza conflict.
