Afghanistan was shaken on Saturday by an earthquake with a Richter Scale of 4.7, according to the National Centre for Seismology.
The earthquake happened at 10:11:10 (IST) at a depth of 100 kilometres, according to NCS.
“Earthquake of Magnitude:4.7, Occurred on 28-10-2023, 10:11:10 IST, Lat: 36.69 & Long: 71.22, Depth: 100 Km, Region: Afghanistan,” the NCS posted from their official handle on X.
Remarkably, this is the fifth earthquake to hit the poor country, and it occurred just one week after a powerful earthquake in the province of Herat killed over 4,000 people.
According to Khaama Press, which cited the Taliban-led ministry, an earthquake in Afghanistan’s Herat province last week claimed over 4,000 lives and destroyed thousands of residential buildings.
The strong aftershocks of the magnitude 6.3 earthquake shook Herat and the surrounding areas. According to a statement released on Saturday by the Taliban-led Afghan Ministry of Disaster Management, 1,983 residential homes in 20 villages in Herat had also been destroyed.
The number of people killed and injured in the earthquake that struck the province of Herat has not yet been estimated by the Taliban.
