After 6.4 magnitude earthquake jolts Nepal, death toll rises to 69

Late on Friday night, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.4 struck Nepal, leaving at least 69 people dead. According to representatives of the National Earthquake Measurement Centre, the epicentre of the earthquake was located in Jajarkot district’s Lamidanda area.

A local official in Jajarkot stated that at least 34 people had died in the district, according to Reuters report. At least 35 deaths have been reported in nearby Rukum West district, a police official told Reuters.

All three of the nation’s security agencies have been called into action for the injured people’s immediate rescue and relief, according to office of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal.

According to the home ministry, reports of accidents and property damage are also coming from the districts of Dailekh, Salyan, and Rolpa.

Victims are given medical treatment at Jajarkot District Hospital.

On October 3, Nepal was rocked by a string of earthquakes, the strongest of which had a magnitude of 6.2. The tremors also shook parts of North India, including the Delhi-NCR region.

Six people lost their lives when a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck the Doti district in November of 2022, a year ago. It was one of several earthquakes that jolted the nation.

Another 7.8-magnitude earthquake in 2015 claimed over 12,000 lives and destroyed roughly a million buildings.
