Air quality in Delhi-NCR deteriorated after Dussehra, prompting the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to enforce Stage 1 of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
According to the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 238 on Wednesday morning.
The reading placed the national capital in the ‘poor’ category for the first time this season.
Authorities have directed the departments and agencies concerned to implement the prescribed pollution-control measures immediately.
Data from 56 of Delhi’s 59 air-quality monitoring stations showed significant variations across the city.
Jahangirpuri recorded an AQI of 308, while Pusa registered 314, placing both locations in the ‘very poor’ category.
Sixteen monitoring stations, including Anand Vihar, reported ‘moderate’ air quality.
Under GRAP, authorities impose Stage 1 restrictions when the AQI ranges between 201 and 300.
Stage 2 applies to readings between 301 and 400, Stage 3 covers 401–450, and Stage 4 comes into force when the AQI exceeds 450.
Agencies will focus on controlling road and construction dust, vehicle emissions and industrial pollution.
They will increase road cleaning and water sprinkling, inspect construction sites and prevent open waste burning.
Authorities will also monitor industries, power plants and brick kilns. Officials will take action against vehicles and industrial units that violate environmental standards.
Officials have urged residents to avoid busy roads during morning and evening walks.
They have also advised people to use public transport, avoid burning leaves or rubbish and maintain valid Pollution Under Control certificates.
Children, elderly people and those with respiratory conditions should take extra precautions.
Anyone experiencing eye irritation, coughing or breathing difficulties should seek medical advice, according to the advisory.
