A layer of haze enveloped several parts of Delhi-NCR on Wednesday morning, reducing visibility as air quality deteriorated following the Dussehra festivities.

The Air Quality Early Warning System (AQEWS) forecast that Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) would enter the ‘poor’ category and remain there until October 23.

Delhi recorded an AQI of 179 on Tuesday, placing it in the ‘moderate’ category.

Forecasts indicate rising pollution levels as winter approaches, when unfavourable weather conditions often trap pollutants over the region.

The CPCB classifies AQI levels of 201–300 as ‘poor’. Delhi last recorded poor air quality on July 13, with an AQI of 246.

Stubble burning remains a concern, with ICAR-IARI reporting 19 incidents across six states.

Punjab and Uttar Pradesh recorded seven each, Madhya Pradesh four and Haryana one.

Smoke from farm fires can worsen Delhi’s pollution, particularly when weak winds trap pollutants.

Temperatures remained below normal at several weather stations. Safdarjung recorded a maximum of 31.8 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 17.7 degrees Celsius.

Palam recorded a maximum of 29.3°C and a minimum of 17.3°C. No rain is expected over the next week.

Delhi’s winter pollution-control plan, effective November 1 to February 28, includes a ‘No PUCC, No Fuel’ policy, restrictions on non-BS-VI vehicles registered outside Delhi and curbs on construction dust.

The government plans to ban construction and demolition from December 10 to January 20 and proposes 50% work from home to cut vehicle emissions.

The measures aim to tackle recurring winter pollution caused by vehicle emissions, construction dust, industrial activity and agricultural fires.
