The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has announced Khalid Jamil as the new head coach of the Indian senior men’s national football team, following approval from the AIFF Executive Committee.
Jamil’s appointment emerged from a three-man shortlist recommended by the AIFF Technical Committee.
Alongside Jamil, the names of Stephen Constantine, a former India coach, and Stefan Tarkovic, who previously managed Slovakia, were under consideration.
The AIFF, in its official statement, highlighted that Dronacharya Award recipients Bimal Ghosh and Armando Colaco, as well as Dhyan Chand Awardee Shabbir Ali, had all backed the idea of appointing an Indian coach.
Technical Committee chairperson IM Vijayan, also in agreement, cited the symbolic significance of bringing in a homegrown coach after more than a decade.
“In the presence of AIFF President Kalyan Chaubey, Vice President NA Haris, Treasurer Shri Kipa Ajay, the members of the Executive and Technical committees, along with both Dronacharya Awardee coaches Bimal Ghosh and Armando Colaco, and Dhyan Chand Awardee Shabbir Ali, the AIFF’s Technical Director Syed Sabir Pasha and National Teams Director Subrata Paul presented a SWOT analysis of all the three shortlisted coaches – Khalid Jamil, Stephen Constantine, and Stefan Tarkovic,” the statement read.
Colaco, Ghosh, and Ali strongly recommended selecting an Indian coach after reviewing the analysis. They noted that many Indian coaches, despite lacking international experience, deserve the opportunity to lead the national side, just as they once did in their careers.
“Technical Committee chairperson IM Vijayan, a Padma Shri and Arjuna awardee, shared his experiences during his playing days, and said that India had a much higher FIFA ranking with the likes of Sukhwinder Singh and Syed Nayeemuddin as the head coaches. Thus, he strongly recommended Khalid Jamil, as he has already been conferred with the AIFF’s Men’s Coach of the Year Award on two occasions (2023-24 and 2024-25),” the statement added.
A former professional midfielder, Jamil has steadily risen through the domestic coaching ranks. He famously led Aizawl FC to their maiden I-League title and has managed clubs across the I-League, I-League 2, and the Indian Super League.
Most recently, Jamil guided Jamshedpur FC to a Super Cup semi-final in the 2023–24 season, followed by an ISL semi-final appearance and a runner-up finish the following year.
His appointment marks the first time in 13 years that an Indian has taken charge of the men’s national team, signalling a renewed commitment to domestic coaching talent.
