India Overtakes Japan To Become World’s Third-Largest Solar Energy Producer

India has officially become the world’s third-largest producer of solar energy, surpassing Japan in a major leap forward in the country’s clean energy transition.

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi announced the development on social media, citing data from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).

According to IRENA, India generated 1,08,494 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of solar energy, overtaking Japan’s production of 96,459 GWh. This achievement marks a significant milestone in India’s efforts to boost renewable energy generation.

Minister Credits PM Modi’s Vision

“India has outpaced Japan in solar energy generation — producing 1,08,494 GWh compared to Japan’s 96,459 GWh — and is now the world’s third-largest solar power producer. Thanks to the visionary leadership of Hon’ble PM Shri @narendramodi ji, India is leading the way in the global clean energy revolution,” Joshi wrote on X.

He attributed the accomplishment to the visionary leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and praised the government’s commitment to clean energy.

IRENA Supports Global Renewable Growth

The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) supports nations in transitioning to sustainable energy systems. It provides comprehensive data, analysis, and policy guidance for renewable energy development around the globe.

India is advancing its ambitious energy strategy to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel electricity capacity by 2030. Solar power has become a central pillar of this strategy, alongside the expansion of wind energy capacity.

India’s wind energy sector is also making steady progress. As of June 30, 2025, the country’s installed wind energy capacity had reached 51.67 GW. In a written reply to Parliament last month, the minister highlighted the sector’s consistent growth:

• 2023–2024: 2,275.55 MW added
• 2024–2025: 3,253.39 MW added
• April–June 2025–2026: 1,637.02 MW added

Top Wind Power Producing States

Gujarat currently leads India in wind energy generation with an installed capacity of 13,816.68 MW.

Tamil Nadu ranks second with 11,830.36 MW, followed by Karnataka, which has 7,714.74 MW of wind power capacity.

India’s growing solar and wind energy capacities reflect its commitment to becoming a global leader in renewable energy.

As the country accelerates its transition away from fossil fuels, these achievements signal a strong foundation for future sustainability.
