World Ocean Day 2023: Know Its Origin, Significance And Celebration

The United Nations created World Ocean Day in 2008, which is celebrated on June 8 each year. It tries to spread awareness regarding the significance of the ocean and how it may be safeguarded. It is organized annually in the form of conferences and seminars by the Office of Legal Affairs’ Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea in association with Oceanic Global.

Significance of Ocean Day

Oceans give us food, control our temperature, and release most of the oxygen we breathe. Our planet’s oceans, which comprise approximately 70% of it, are home to a variety of living things. World Ocean Day serves as a reminder of how vital the oceans are to the survival of life. It was created after it became clear how important this message was. A growing amount of aquatic life is endangered and destroyed annually as a result of human activity. A species has been seriously harmed by overfishing, waste disposal, the release of chemicals, and non-sustainable practices. The message of World Ocean Day is that preserving the oceans and embracing sustainable resource use are essential for our survival.

How It is celebrated

The United Nations selects a new theme each year to commemorate World Ocean Day. It is titled ‘Planet Ocean: Tides are Changing’ this year. The United Nations wants to get through that protecting the oceans, which are vital to human survival, should be a top priority.

People join together on this day to celebrate each other’s connections with the sea and to spread understanding of the vital role it plays in our lives. People become more aware and feel the importance of the oceans in human life and how we can contribute to its preservation.

Numerous events were held on June 8 and will continue to be held worldwide. World leaders gathered for conferences, seminars, and talks to share information and discuss ways to protect the oceans. This day also serves to remind us that plastic is the main cause of contamination of water.

World Ocean Day educates people about the importance of the ocean and the need for all of us to work together to protect it.
