Italian Lawmaker Breastfeeds Son in Parliament, Gets Applause From House Members

On Wednesday, lawmaker Gilda Sportiello breastfed her son Federico in the Chamber of Deputies, prompting a round of applause from other members. This was the first time a baby had ever sat in the Italian parliament.

Gets best wishes from members

In many other nations, the incident might be more commonplace, the acting lower-house speaker highlighted it. Giorgio Mule who chaired the parliamentary session said,”It’s the first time, with the backing of all parties. Best wishes to Federico for a long, free, and peaceful life. Now we will speak quitely.”

A parliamentary rules panel approved allowing female lawmakers to bring their babies into the chamber and breastfeed them to the age of one in November last year.

Women stop breastfeeding early

Sportiello, a member of the left-leaning 5-Star Movement, claimed that “too many women stop breastfeeding ahead of time, not by choice, but rather because they are forced to return to the workplace.”

Most lawmakers are men in Italy

Giorgia Meloni became Italy’s prime minister in October but most of lawmakers in country are men. For the first time such event took place in Italy but in European Parliament Licia Ronzulli, now a senator in the centre-right Forza Italia part breastfed her daughter 13 years ago.
