On Wednesday, lawmaker Gilda Sportiello breastfed her son Federico in the Chamber of Deputies, prompting a round of applause from other members. This was the first time a baby had ever sat in the Italian parliament.

Gets best wishes from members

In many other nations, the incident might be more commonplace, the acting lower-house speaker highlighted it. Giorgio Mule who chaired the parliamentary session said,”It’s the first time, with the backing of all parties. Best wishes to Federico for a long, free, and peaceful life. A parliamentary rules panel approved allowing female lawmakers to bring their babies into the chamber and breastfeed them to the age of one in November last year.

Women stop breastfeeding early

Sportiello, a member of the left-leaning 5-Star Movement, claimed that “too many women stop breastfeeding ahead of time, not by choice, but rather because they are forced to return to the workplace.”
