Woman Commission demands Bihar CM Nitish Kumar to apologise over population control remark

The National Commission for Women, led by Rekha Sharma, and the head of Delhi’s women’s panel, Swati Maliwal, have criticised Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s comments made in the state assembly. The leaders of Janata Dal-United (JDU) have been criticised for remarks he made regarding population control, and both have called for an apology.

During her remarks on Tuesday, the Chief Minister of Bihar emphasised the importance of educating girls in order to control the population.

The National Commission for Women said, “Such remarks are not only regressive but also egregiously insensitive to women’s rights and choices. Bihar’s chief minister should issue an apology to women across the country for these deeply offensive remarks” on X.

“On behalf of every woman in this country, as the Chairperson of the National Commission for Women, I demand an immediate and unequivocal apology from the Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar. His crass remarks in the Vidhan Sabha are an affront to the dignity and respect that every woman deserves. Such derogatory and cheap language used during his speech is a dark stain on our society,” NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma said.

“If a leader could make such comments so openly in a democracy, one can only imagine the horror the state must be enduring under his leadership. We stand firm against such behaviour and call for accountability,” Sharma wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Women panel head Swati Maliwal said, “Strongly condemn the disgraceful language used by Bihar CM Shri Nitish Kumar while addressing the assembly. He must immediately apologise!”
