Violence Erupts Amid Bypolls On Four Assembly Seats In West Bengal

In various areas of the four Assembly constituencies violence erupts amid bypolls on Wednesday. The Nadia district’s Ranaghat-Dakshin Assembly constituency was the source of the most number of complaints.

Tension was rising in the Payradanga neighborhood of Ranaghat-Dakshin as a result of reports that early in the morning, masked miscreants had attacked and looted the homes of many BJP employees, including a party polling agent.

Srabanti De, miscreants ransacked BJP poll worker’s home. The worker informed the media that some thirty-five criminals had broken into her home early in the morning and intimidated her, demanding that she stay at home throughout the voting session.

In various areas of the four Assembly constituencies, there have been reports of violence.

“I have sought the attention of the Election Commission of India in the matter. My house was not the only one which was ransacked. Several BJP supporters in the area faced similar threats by the miscreants, all of which have the backing of the ruling Trinamool Congress. They threatened us to remain at home during the polling period,” De said.

The district police of Nadia claimed that they are investigating the matter strictly. The police claimed that they have arrested 26 person in the connection of violence. On the other hand, Trinamool Congress candidate from Ranaghat-Dakshin constituency, Dr Mukut Mani Adhikari, have declined the allegations.

“I have been on the streets since morning and moving from one place to another. I am not aware of any such complaint. Polling is going on peacefully everywhere. Rather, what I heard is that some miscreants enjoying the back of BJP are trying to intimidate the voters in certain pockets,” Adhikari said.

Voting remains low as violence erupts amid bypolls

The four assembly constituency, where voting was taking place, have recorded an average voter turnout of 10.8%

As per statistics provided by the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), West Bengal the maximum polling percentage was reported from Raiganj in North Dinajpur district at 12.01. Ranaghat-Dakshin in Nadia stood at second with 11.58% followed by 10.61 at Bagda in North 24 Parganas. Maniktala in Kolkata observed 9.01 percent voting.
