Samajwadi Party candidate Sushil Kumar Patel has put teachers’ rights, pension and issues facing unaided schools at the centre of his campaign for the Lucknow Teachers’ constituency in the 2026 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections.
Patel has described the election as an opportunity to raise teachers’ concerns and rights in the Legislative Council.
According to his profile and election pledge document, he has worked in the education sector for 26 years and has focused on new approaches in education.
His stated proposals include bringing recognised unaided schools under the grant-in-aid system and ensuring a minimum honorarium for teachers working in unaided institutions.
He has also called for increasing the retirement age of teachers and employees in aided educational institutions to 65 years.
Pension remains another key issue in his pledge document. Patel has proposed a pension system for teachers in unaided schools and called for the restoration of the Old Pension Scheme (OPS).
His other proposals include regularising long-serving ad hoc teachers and creating regular posts for computer teachers in schools.
Patel has sought fairer exam centre allocation, development funds for unaided schools, teacher housing and uniform recognition standards.
He also proposed enforcing RTE norms and regulating student strength to support education quality.
The Lucknow Teachers’ seat is among 11 UP Legislative Council seats going to polls on October 23, with counting on October 27.
The contest includes BJP’s sitting MLC Umesh Dwivedi, whom the party has retained as its candidate from the Lucknow Teachers’ constituency.
For Patel, the campaign centres on the issues outlined in his pledge document, particularly OPS, pension, regularisation, support for unaided institutions and greater uniformity across the education system.
