Apple on Wednesday launched Apple Pay in India, allowing eligible users to make payments through iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch. The company said it will introduce Mac support soon.
Customers with Axis Bank-issued Visa and Mastercard credit cards can add their cards to Apple Pay and use them at thousands of stores and online merchants across India.
Users can pay wherever NFC transactions are accepted.
Apple Pay Vice President Jennifer Bailey said the service offers secure and private payments as digital transactions grow.
The service lets users pay in stores, apps and websites without entering card details, PINs or OTPs.
For security, Apple does not store card numbers on devices or its servers. Instead, it assigns an encrypted Device Account Number stored securely in the device’s Secure Element.
Apple said it does not retain transaction data linked to users. Transactions remain between users, merchants and their banks or card issuers.
Users can add eligible cards through the latest Axis Bank app or directly through the Apple Wallet app by selecting the plus sign and following the instructions. Once added, customers can use Apple Pay immediately.
Axis Bank MD and CEO Amitabh Chaudhry said the launch gives the bank’s credit card customers greater choice and flexibility across Visa and Mastercard networks.
Mastercard’s Gautam Aggarwal said Apple Pay will support secure and convenient contactless payments.
Visa’s Suresh Sethi called the launch a milestone for India’s digital payments.
Users will retain existing card rewards, while Apple Pay operates in over 90 countries with more than 11,000 bank and network partners.
