Union Home Minister Amit Shah will visit Jalandhar on Wednesday to address the concluding programme of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra, a statewide campaign focused on raising awareness about drug abuse. The campaign has covered all 117 Assembly constituencies in Punjab.
Four yatras, launched from different parts of Punjab on September 18, will converge in Jalandhar after covering nearly 4,000 km.
The rally comes ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections, with the BJP highlighting drug abuse as a key campaign issue.
The party further aims to raise awareness about addiction and promote a drug-free Punjab.
BJP leaders expect around two lakh people to attend. The party has arranged a 50-55-acre venue, with 40 acres for the gathering and the rest for parking. Nearly 2,000 buses are expected to bring supporters to Jalandhar.
The programme will also highlight the experiences of families affected by drug abuse, according to the BJP.
Shah’s visit comes as the BJP has stepped up its activities in Punjab ahead of the Assembly elections. The party has criticised the ruling Aam Aadmi Party government over its handling of the drug issue, while the state government has maintained its commitment to tackling the problem.
The BJP has described the yatra as an awareness campaign aimed at encouraging people in both villages and cities to participate in efforts against addiction.
The wider national anti-drug campaign also remains a government priority, with the Centre’s Nasha Mukt Bharat 2029 roadmap focusing on prevention, treatment, rehabilitation and public awareness.
To review preparations, Punjab BJP President Kewal Singh Dhillon and state in-charge Satish Poonia visited the rally venue. They reviewed security, traffic management, parking, public convenience and other arrangements.
Dhillon said the yatra would reach people across Punjab and raise awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.
