In a significant move to empower girl students and enhance their self-defense skills, the Basic Education Department has initiated a program to teach Judo Karate in government schools across the district.
This program aims to train 6,000 girls in self-defense techniques, deploying 125 instructors to facilitate the training.
This initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to address the persistent issue of harassment against girls.
Despite various schemes and campaigns, such as the police-led Nari Shakti campaign, incidents of kidnapping and harassment continue to be a concern.
To further bolster these efforts, the government has launched the Rani Lakshmibai self-defense training program, targeting school and college girls.
In the first phase of the program, 329 schools in Hamirpur district were selected. Here, girl students will receive one hour of Judo Karate training daily over 24 teaching days.
The deployment process for sports teachers to these schools has already begun, with training sessions scheduled from July to December.
The program has seen substantial interest, with 2,802 girls from 69 schools in Hamirpur applying online and 3,200 girls from 80 schools applying offline to participate in the training.
Additionally, 650 girl students from seven Kasturba Gandhi schools will also receive this training.
To ensure effective implementation, 125 instructors have been appointed to provide Judo Karate training.
The school however will manage payments to each instructor, who will receive an honorarium of Rs 2,500 for conducting 24 days of training.
BSA Alok Singh confirmed informing the selected schools’ teachers about the program, and training will commence on 1 July.
This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to equipping girls with essential self-defense skills, promoting their safety and confidence.
