TMC Protests At Rajghat, Demands Centre To Release West Bengal MNREGA Funds

On Monday, the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth, Trinamool Congress MPs, MLAs, and party supporters sat on a protest at Rajghat in New Delhi under the leadership of party general secretary and Lok Sabha Abhishek Banerjee and demanded to release MNREGA funds for West Bengal.

Banerjee paid respects at the memorial alongside hundreds of party members, including legislators who travelled from all around West Bengal to participate in the protest.

Some of the demonstrators carried black signs reading, “Release funds for Bengal,” and “Bengal Deprived: 1 lakh 15 thousand crore families, Rs. 15,000 crore owed.”

West Bengal government has accused BJP-led NDA administration of withholding 15,000 crore fund under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) and the PM Awas Yojana.

Biswajit Dev, a TMC spokesperson said, “Is this democracy? Centre is using schemes for political benefits,” he alleged, adding, “This is an insult to the poor people and to Mahatma Gandhi after whom MNREGA has been named.”

Chaiti Barman Barua, a TMC leader from Cooch Behar said, “People are suffering and the central government has not paid any attention to the issue. We have come here to make our voices heard.”
