“This Is Why We Chose South Pole”, Reveals ISRO Chief S Somnath

On 23 August at 6:04 pm India created history as country’s most ambitious mission Chandrayaan-3 successfully soft landed on the moon’s south polar region and became the first country to achieve this feat.

Revealing why they chose the south Pole region for soft landing ISRO Chief said, “Entire instrumentation of Chandrayaan-3 is for landing on the south pole or near the south pole. But there are a huge amount of scientific possibilities on the South Pole. They are related to the presence of water and minerals on the moon.”

As per NDTV, ISRO Chief S Somnath further said, “Everything had to be done fresh for this mission. From Chandrayaan-2, we could not recover anything from the moon.” The first year was spent figuring out what went wrong with Chandrayaan-2, the next year we revised everything. The last 2 years we conducted tests. Covid upset some of our programmes. But we were still launching some rockets. Post-Covid, we are back on track.”

Chandrayaan-3’s achievement is so special because no other spacecraft has been able to achieve this milestone. The South Pole is full of craters and deep trenches, hence this lunar mission will help in finding facts regarding lunar water ice which is the most valuable resource of the moon.

Entire country celebrated this proud moment like a festival, despite being divided by caste, culture and religion. Chandrayaan-3 was India’s third lunar mission. In the year 2019, Chandrayaan-2 failed to soft land the rover after which ISRO scientists doubled their efforts and detected the technical glitches leaving no stone unturned in making Chandrayaan-3 lunar mission successful.
