Survivors of the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks welcomed the extradition of Pakistani-Canadian national Tahawwur Rana from the United States, calling it a significant win for India and urging authorities to hand him the death penalty.
Survivors Applaud Government For Extradition Of Tahawwur Rana
Natwarlal Rotawan, who survived the 2008 Mumbai attacks, praised the Indian government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi for securing Rana’s extradition.
He said the world would truly celebrate India only when the court awards Tahawwur Rana the death sentence.
Rotawan, who famously identified terrorist Ajmal Kasab during the trial, added, “PM Modi is like a lion; we went inside Pakistan and killed terrorists. After Rana, David Headley and Hafiz Saeed should also be brought to justice.”
His daughter, Devika Rotawan, also a survivor, called Rana’s extradition a ‘big victory’ for the Indian government.
She urged authorities to bring back and punish other masterminds of the attack, including Hafiz Saeed and Dawood Ibrahim.
Victim From Varanasi Recalls The Tragedy
Sunita, a resident of Varanasi who lost her husband during the attack, recalled the horror of that night at the railway station.
“We thought the gunfire was firecrackers. When we tried to run, a bullet hit my husband in the head. I grabbed my children and fled. I was also hit in the attack,” she said.
Sunita expressed hope that justice would now be served.
Rana To Face Trial In India
The Indian government has secured Rana’s extradition to India after years of legal pursuit.
Upon arrival, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) will take custody of him.
Convicted in the United States for supporting Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT)—the terrorist group responsible for the 26/11 attacks—Rana has long been on India’s radar for aiding the plot that killed over 160 people in Mumbai.
The US Supreme Court’s decision has set Rana’s extradition in motion, marking a significant step in India’s efforts to bring all those involved in the attack to justice.
Special Prosecutor Appointed For Trial
The Central Government has appointed Advocate Narender Mann as Special Public Prosecutor to lead the prosecution in the NIA’s case against Tahawwur Rana and David Coleman Headley.
Headley, a key conspirator in the attack, is currently serving a prison sentence in the US following a plea deal.
Rana’s extradition signals renewed momentum in India’s push to prosecute all those responsible for the devastating 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
