Weeks ahead of the WAVE Summit in Mumbai, the PMO has directed India to position itself as a global creative economy hub.
Dubbed the ‘content subcontinent’, India is now gearing up to lead globally in digital content, media, gaming, and entertainment.
A Strategic Creative Leap
In early April, the government directed officials to fast-track initiatives under the ‘Orange Economy’, covering creative and cultural industries.
As part of this strategic direction, these include media, digital content, OTT, music, gaming, and the gig economy.
Riding the momentum, the WAVE Summit will highlight India’s creative strengths and attract global investment.
PM Modi’s Vision For The Industry
Speaking at the CNN-News18 Rising Bharat Summit 2025, PM Modi reaffirmed his belief in India’s entertainment and content sectors.
“Bharat has done great in creating movies, podcasts, OTT series, and gaming. This will be a booming economy. The government will support and celebrate content creators through WAVE,” he stated.
The government aims to boost AI-driven content, ensure ethical tech use, and protect intellectual property.
An I&B Ministry official said the focus is on helping Indian creators thrive with AI, not be replaced by it.
Policies will support innovation while guarding against misinformation.
To engage young creators, the government launched citywide contests from music to drone design, with finalists to be awarded at the WAVE Summit in Mumbai.
Why ‘Orange’ Economy Matters
The term ‘Orange Economy’ comes from a book by the Inter-American Development Bank, symbolizing creativity and transformation.
India sees this sector as a key job creator, especially in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, where localized content and OTT hubs are emerging.
This decentralized approach aims to reduce urban migration and spread economic benefits across the country.
The government is planning a state-of-the-art creative economy institute in Mumbai to train the next generation of storytellers and digital innovators.
Inspired by Dubai’s media ecosystem, the Indian government aims to offer infrastructure, policy backing, and global exposure.
For the Modi government, this is more than economic reform – it’s a strategic push to boost India’s cultural influence globally.
