Imran Khan’s family has voiced alarm over what they describe as ‘illegal isolation’ imposed on the former Pakistan Prime Minister, who remains incarcerated at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail.
According to them, the authorities have not allowed his relatives or legal team to meet him for several weeks, fuelling uncertainty about his well-being.
In a statement expressing deep frustration, the family said they have been left completely uninformed about Khan’s condition. They argued that while official prison briefings regularly appear in the media, they no longer have confidence in those reports.
Khan’s sister urged the authorities to comply with judicial orders so they can allow family and legal visits, insisting that they reinstate lawful access without delay.
She added that the family believed Khan remained unharmed only because the authorities would not risk any action against a leader who retains widespread national support. The family maintains that any attempt to endanger him would carry ‘serious consequences’ given his influence.
The last meaningful family meeting took place on October 16, at the conclusion of the jail proceedings involving Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi. Since then, the authorities have granted only Dr Uzma Khan two brief visits on 28 October and 4 November, each lasting around 20 minutes.
Restrictions Linked to Military Appointment Raise Questions
The family also revealed that officials recently told them they would not permit any visits until Asim Munir receives his extension notification. They expressed bafflement at the connection, questioning why access to a detainee should depend on a formal decision involving a government official.
They stressed that the authorities have completely cut them off since early November, allowing no legal consultations or political contact.
Meanwhile, speculation on social media regarding Khan’s health and whereabouts intensified. Adiala Jail authorities dismissed these claims, saying he had neither been transferred nor suffered any health crises. They described the rumours as baseless and asserted that Khan was receiving appropriate medical care.
Khan, imprisoned since August 2023, continues to face several cases, including charges related to corruption and terrorism.
PTI has called on the government to issue a clear statement dispelling the rumours surrounding Khan and to facilitate a meeting between him and his family immediately. The party said the state remains responsible for ensuring Khan’s safety and constitutional rights, and vowed to pursue legal and political steps to secure transparency regarding his detention.
