CM of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal, had a setback on Monday, August 7, when the Rajya Sabha passed the Government of National Capital Territory of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023, also known as the Delhi services bill.
With 131 votes in favor and 101 votes against, the bill was approved. On August 3, the Lok Sabha approved the law that had been a reason behind conflict between the Aam Aadmi Party and the government.
Division slips were used during the voting. On the Delhi services bill, the opposition had requested for the votes to be divided.
Union Home Minister, Amit Shah tabled the bill in the Upper House to replace an ordinance that controlling the postings and transfers of officers were in hands Delhi administration.
The ordinance was introduced only a few days after the Supreme Court granted the Delhi government executive authority over service-related issues.
Unruly behavior was seen in the Rajya Sabha during the bill’s debate, particularly between AAP MPs and the Centre.
Arvind Kejriwal, AAP leader, undertook a national campaign gather support for against the centre ordinance. AAP was able to garner support from the major opposition parties, including the Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, Janata Dal United, Congress, Bharath Rashtriya Samiti (BRS), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), and others against the ordinance.
