Remembering Swami Sahajanand Saraswati During Farmers’ Protest

Remembrance…

Gopal ji rai

Whenever there is talk about farmers’ movement in the country or the beginning of the movement, everyone remembers their messiah Swami Sahajanand Saraswati ji and his tireless hard work. It has 73 years since he left this world.

The farmer community had greatly benefited from what he did and was considered to be the center point of the political axis of that time. And today the situation is again tending towards the same. The question is not only about the burning questions of the farmers, but also about the inclusive existence of Aryavarta which is constantly facing challenges from within the country and abroad. Therefore, a huge responsibility has fallen on the farmers who provide food and their children who generally protect them by becoming soldiers.

If they lead the current farmers’ movement following the footsteps of Swami Sahajanand Saraswati, then undoubtedly India will become stronger and their dominance will increase. But if they deviates from the paths shown by him, the struggle in life will increase.

Question on the current farmer movement

Needless to say, even in the third decade of the 21st century, some farmer leaders are not able to develop a comprehensive national understanding beyond their petty caste, communal and regional thinking, due to which question are often raised on the customs and policies of the farmer movement. Whereas, during the plague epidemic that spread in the last years of the second decade and the beginning of the third decade of the twentieth century, Swami Sahajanand Saraswati gave a unique example of service to the common people like farmers and laborers and cooperation to the government by evoking the social concerns of the saint. Presented, everyone is feeling its need today. Especially the trio of Modi-Yogi-Nitish government is in dire need of practical support from a public leader like him.

Today there is a saffron government on the land of India, this eternal land is covered with saints, but why are the farmers having to resort to agitation again and again, is it just a political gimmick or a fight for the interests of the farmers. It is said that history is made in the present. But what an irony it is that the contemporary present seems helpless in reclaiming its faded past.

The personality of Swami Sahajananda Saraswati is an exception

Who does not know that usually history repeats itself, but the personality and work of Swami Sahajanand Saraswati is an exception till now. What will happen next is in the depths of the future, but the present is haunted by memories of them. Yet history did not repeat itself! While people are eagerly waiting for a hero like him who will change their life.

Believe it or not, but whenever farmers are discussed in Indian politics, the memory of Dandi Swami ‘Swami Sahajanand Saraswati’ who organized them at the national level for the first time comes to mind. It would not be wrong if it is said that Swamiji was the first and last all-India leader of farmers. In fact, he was the first farmer leader who gave voice to the burning questions of the farmers, but on that basis never sought political begging from the common people to send himself to the Legislative Assembly or Parliament. That is why he is unique and also pioneer.

When contemporary farmer leaders are seen to be in contact with the ruling party or the opposition, the apprehension is strong that these people may also bargain with the interests of farmers and agricultural labourers. Because no matter how excited the farming community may have been by the success of the farmer leader of North India, Chaudhary Mahendra Singh Tikait, in the later years, the deviation of the Bharatiya Kisan Union from the real issues of the farmers and then the real stream of BKU also attracted the anti-national elements. No matter how much their popularity may have increased due to their association, the suspicion about their intentions has also increased in the Indian society which is concerned about national unity and integrity, which, despite the immediate success of the farmers’ movement, creates a feeling of disappointment.

Especially when our Parliament and Legislative Assemblies are not serious about the condition of Indian farmers. The three-tier Panchayati Raj institutions have also deviated from their original objectives. All these institutions have become mere ‘puppets’ in the hands of anti-people capitalists. They talk about farmers, but most of their decisions are anti-farmer. To save their own skin from a possible farmer revolt, they have divided the farmers on the basis of caste, religion, language and region to such an extent that they have deviated from their original agenda. Therefore their economic plight has also increased. Truth be told, since the prevalence of suicide among farmers has increased, the situation has become more complex and dire. That is why everyone remembers Swami Sahajanand Saraswati again and again. Swamiji was always alert about the means and intelligence of the farmers’ movement.

Swamiji’s political stature

Actually, Swamiji’s political stature is equivalent to that of the country’s first Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru. But no need was felt to award him Bharat Ratna after his death. Perhaps because the voice of the farmers remains suppressed for many births. He could not gain further inner energy even in his name. There is no doubt that no other leader could later get the credit that Swami Sahajanand Saraswati ji received for setting up the organized farmers’ movement in India. This is because service and sacrifice was the basic mantra of Swamiji. He was completely dedicated to nationalism and humanity. He seemed 100% determined to remove corruption from the system. Now no one will be able to adopt this basic mantra, because the priority of the farming community has changed.

Today, reservation is necessary for a large section of farmers, they like lollipop schemes, while there is no overall opposition to certain laws which discourage agricultural economy and indirectly exploit farmers. This is the reason why till date no concrete opposition has been raised against the governments which are continuously showing negligence in the matters of providing electricity, seeds, fertilizers, water, wages and proper support price to the farms. This will not happen in the near future, because now the trend of selling out leadership has increased! Truth be told, MNREGA has increased ‘rural prostitution’ to such an extent that even agricultural laborers have become disillusioned with their profession, due to which the farming activities of educated farmers are being greatly affected. There is a shortage of laborers doing agricultural work in the villages. This is the reason behind the protest against the agricultural laws brought by the Modi government, but the method of protest is not for Bahujan’s welfare and Bahujan’s well-being.

Strong farmer leader

Despite this, there is no strong national leader visible to give voice to these burning questions, rather there is definitely a glimpse of some opportunistic alliance. The attitude of BKU leader Rakesh Tikait definitely gives some hope, but beyond the scope of North India, his reach among the farmers of Eastern India, Western India, Central India and South India is minimal, due to which his movement is not considered complete.

There is no doubt that in the present era, not just one or two organizations, but two-three hundred organizations are jointly promoting the cause of farmers’ interest or are baking their political bread for some other party. Don’t even understand. That is why it is said that after Swamiji, no such farmer leader was born who would stay away from electoral politics and talk only about the farmers. Discuss only their future interests and needs and take them forward.

Role of farmer organizations

Today, there are farmer organizations in every political party, but their role in the interest of farmers is minimal or negligible. Without changing this situation, it is not possible to create a national farmer leader. We should not forget that despite being a Dandi Sanyasi, he called ‘bread as God’ and described farmers as more than ‘gods’. Due to this the farmers also came to know about their importance. Swamiji was so sensitive towards the farmers that in the then unbearable circumstances, he gave a clear slogan that “The one who produces food and clothing will now make laws.” This India belongs to him, now he will rule it.”

Undoubtedly, Swami Sahajanand Saraswati had seen less freedom and more slavery. Therefore, the whites were more vocal against the British than the blacks. It is understood that when he saw the terror and rudeness of the government employees in the process of collecting land revenue from the farmers, he gave voice to the suppressed voice of the farmers and said, “We will not pay the land revenue now, Long live our life.” History is witness to the fact that this slogan was very popular among the farmers and was very useful in shaking the foundations of the British Sultanate.
