Rajasthan: 16-Year-Old NEET Student Commits Suicide, State Reported 25 Cases This Year

Police in Sikar, Rajasthan, reported that an 18-year-old student preparing for National Eligibility Completion Entrance Test (NEET) to get into medical college committed suicide on Saturday.

In the district, there have been two similar incidents in the past month. Kota, the largest coaching centre in the state, has seen 25 student suicides so far this year.

The police claim that the Nadbai teen from Bharatpur arrived in Sikar six months ago and has been residing at a hostel in Udyoga Nagar since then.

“The student skipped the coaching class today and the incident took place when his roommate was off to the institute,” said Surendra Singh Degra, station house officer (SHO) of Udyog Nagar police station.

When the victim didn’t answer repeated knocks, the victim’s roommate reported the incident to the hostel authority, who broke open the door and discovered the victim hanging from the fan.

The SHO said no suicide note was found. “The body has been sent to the district medical college hospital for an autopsy. Further investigation is underway,” he said.

On September 4, a 16-year-old NEET student from Karauli committed suicide. On September 7, 2022, another suicide case was reported at the same place.

A high-level state committee headed by the higher education secretary Bhawani Singh Detha issued a directive on September 27 ordering the establishment of monitoring centres in Kota and Sikar due to an increase in suicide cases in those cities.
