Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Gangtok, Sikkim, on Thursday to attend the golden jubilee celebrations marking 50 years of Sikkim’s statehood.
The event, themed ‘Sikkim@50: Where Progress Meets Purpose and Nature Nurtures Growth’, will be held at Paljor Stadium and will honour Sikkim’s historic transition from a monarchy to the 22nd state of India in 1975.
The event also celebrates the state’s journey of sustainable development, environmental leadership, and socio-economic growth.
In 1975, Sikkim became a full-fledged Indian state following a referendum, with Article 371F enshrining constitutional protections for the preservation of its ethnic and cultural identity.
The Sikkim government has launched a year-long programme titled ‘Sunaulo, Samriddha and Samarth Sikkim’, showcasing the state’s rich heritage and natural beauty.
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for several key infrastructure projects. These include:
PM Modi will also unveil commemorative tokens, including a souvenir coin, a stamp, and a commemorative coin celebrating 50 years of Sikkim’s statehood.
The Prime Minister deferred his 16 May visit due to ‘Operation Sindoor’, India’s military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
His presence now reaffirms the Centre’s commitment to regional development in the Northeast.
In preparation for the occasion, the Sikkim government has invited officials across departments, including those from PSUs and central agencies.
Officials also issued administrative advisories, temporarily closing offices and schools and imposing traffic restrictions in Gangtok to ensure the event ran smoothly.
Later in the day, PM Modi will visit Alipurduar in West Bengal to lay the foundation stone for the City Gas Distribution (CGD) project spanning Alipurduar and Cooch Behar districts.
The initiative marks a significant step in bolstering clean energy infrastructure in eastern India.
Through these engagements, the Prime Minister underscores the government’s dual focus on cultural pride and forward-looking infrastructure, aligning with India’s broader vision of inclusive and sustainable growth.
