Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to visit Gangtok, Sikkim, on Thursday to attend the golden jubilee celebrations marking 50 years of Sikkim’s statehood.
At around 11 AM tomorrow, 29th May, I look forward to being among my sisters and brothers of Sikkim to participate in a programme to mark Sikkim@50. India is very proud of the contribution of Sikkim towards national progress. The unique culture of Sikkim is also widely admired.

The event, themed ‘Sikkim@50: Where Progress Meets Purpose and Nature Nurtures Growth’, will be held at Paljor Stadium and will honour Sikkim’s historic transition from a monarchy to the 22nd state of India in 1975.
The event also celebrates the state’s journey of sustainable development, environmental leadership, and socio-economic growth.
In 1975, Sikkim became a full-fledged Indian state following a referendum, with Article 371F enshrining constitutional protections for the preservation of its ethnic and cultural identity.
The Sikkim government has launched a year-long programme titled ‘Sunaulo, Samriddha and Samarth Sikkim’, showcasing the state’s rich heritage and natural beauty.
Major Projects Inaugurated
During his visit, Prime Minister Modi will inaugurate and lay the foundation stone for several key infrastructure projects. These include:
- A state-of-the-art 500-bedded District Hospital in Namchi, costing over ₹750 crore,
- A new Passenger Ropeway at Sangachoeling, Pelling, in Gyalshing district, and
- A Statue of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee at Atal Amrit Udyan in Sangkhola, Gangtok district
PM Modi will also unveil commemorative tokens, including a souvenir coin, a stamp, and a commemorative coin celebrating 50 years of Sikkim’s statehood.
The Prime Minister deferred his 16 May visit due to ‘Operation Sindoor’, India’s military response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
His presence now reaffirms the Centre’s commitment to regional development in the Northeast.
In preparation for the occasion, the Sikkim government has invited officials across departments, including those from PSUs and central agencies.
With immense honour and pride, we extend our warmest welcome to the Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri @narendramodi Ji, to our beautiful Himalayan state.
