PM Modi Pays Tribute To Bhai Parmanand Ahead Of 150th Birth Anniversary

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday paid tribute to freedom fighter Bhai Parmanand, recalling his contributions to India’s independence movement, his association with the Arya Samaj and his role in the Ghadar Party.

Addressing the 139th episode of his monthly radio programme, Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi urged young people to learn about the revolutionary’s life ahead of his 150th birth anniversary on November 4.

The Prime Minister described Bhai Parmanand as a great figure who left a lasting mark on India’s history. He said the freedom fighter’s association with the Arya Samaj shaped his ideals and inspired his work.

PM Modi recalled that Parmanand travelled to South Africa in the early 20th century for Arya Samaj activities, where he met Mahatma Gandhi.

He also worked among the Girmitiya community in Guyana, then an important centre for the organisation. PM Modi shared that he had visited an Arya Samaj memorial during his own trip to Guyana.

Highlighting Parmanand’s role in the freedom struggle, PM Modi said he encouraged Lala Har Dayal to travel to America and became one of the founding members of the Ghadar Party. The British authorities later sentenced him to transportation for life, commonly known as ‘Kala Pani’, for his revolutionary activities.

PM Modi urged people to read Parmanand’s book, Aapbeeti: Kaale Paani Ki Kaaraavaas Kahaani, which documents his prison experiences.

He noted that Parmanand later taught Bhagat Singh and remained associated with the Hindu Mahasabha. PM Modi urged young people to learn about the freedom fighter’s sacrifices and share his legacy.
