PM Modi Hails Para-Athletes After India's Record-Breaking Medal Performance

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated Indian para-athletes after they secured a record 114 medals at the Asian Para Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan. India finished fourth in the overall standings, recording its best-ever performance at the continental event.

The Indian contingent won 30 gold, 35 silver and 49 bronze medals, surpassing its previous record of 108 medals, including 27 gold, at the 2023 edition in Hangzhou, China.

In a post on X, PM Modi praised the athletes for their determination and exceptional performances. He said the record medal tally was a moment of immense pride for the country and acknowledged the contribution of every member of the contingent.

India crossed the 100-medal mark for the second consecutive edition, achieving the milestone with a smaller contingent than the one that competed in Hangzhou. The result marked another significant achievement for the country’s para-sports movement.

Para-athletics led India’s medal tally with 65 medals, including 22 gold, 19 silver and 24 bronze. Para-badminton contributed 16 medals, while para-swimming athletes secured 11. India also won six medals in para-archery and five in shooting.

The contingent added seven bronze medals in para-table tennis, two silver in powerlifting and two medals in judo, comprising one silver and one bronze.

Sumit Antil defended his javelin gold, while Simran Sharma won two gold medals and set two Games records.

Mona Agarwal secured shooting gold, and 50-year-old Jehan Dorab Madan became India’s oldest medallist with bronze in para-table tennis.
