Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday observed a moment of silence in Bihar’s Madhubani to honour the victims of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 28 lives.
Addressing a public gathering on National Panchayati Raj Day, PM Modi urged the crowd to join him in paying respects.
“Let us all stand together in this moment of grief and observe a one-minute silence. I urge everyone to observe silence for a couple of minutes to pay homage to the family members whom we lost in the Pahalgam terror attack on 22 April,” the Prime Minister stated.
PM Modi further concluded the tribute with a chant of ‘Om Shanti’.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar also condemned the attack, expressing solidarity with the bereaved families.
“Two days ago, a terror attack took place in Pahalgam of J&K, which claimed the lives of several people. This is a very sad incident, and we condemn this act. We extend our condolences to the families of the victims, and we stand strong with them. The whole nation is standing against terrorism, and I thank PM Modi for that, too,” Bihar CM further noted.
In response to the attack, the central government has, however, called for an all-party meeting at 6 PM in Parliament to deliberate on national security and subsequent measures.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will chair the meeting.
Earlier, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced a set of decisive actions. These were taken by the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Meanwhile, the key measures include:
- Suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 with immediate effect.
- Immediate closure of the integrated checkpost at Attari.
- Suspension of SAARC Visa Exemption privileges for Pakistani nationals.
- Declaration of all Defence, Military, Naval, and Air Advisors in the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi as persona non grata, requiring them to leave India within a week.
- Withdrawal of Indian Defence, Navy, and Air Advisors from the High Commission in Islamabad, with the positions being officially annulled.
The brutal attack on 22 April targeted tourists in the popular Pahalgam area, leaving 28 dead and many others injured, prompting nationwide grief and a firm diplomatic and security response.
