The Union Cabinet increased the LPG subsidy for Ujjwala beneficiaries on Wednesday, October 4, from previous Rs 200 per cylinder to Rs 300 as a relief to households. This was stated by Union Minister Anurag Thakur during a briefing on Cabinet decisions.
Domestic LPG, the type used for cooking in residential kitchens, is currently priced at Rs 903 per 14.2-kg cylinder.
After the subsidy was terminated in June 2020, all users, including Ujjwala Yojana beneficiaries, purchased LPG cylinders at a market price. Following the recent government decision, beneficiaries of the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana will now receive a direct bank account credit for a subsidy of Rs 300 as opposed to Rs 200 previously.
Beneficiaries of the Ujjwala Yojana would pay Rs 603 for each 14.2-kg cylinder as the actual price.
Adult women who belong to SC, ST, Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin), most-backward classes, Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY), tea and ex-tea garden tribes, forest dwellers, residents of islands and river islands, SECC households (AHL TIN), and poor households as per the 14-point declaration are eligible to receive an LPG connection under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana. The candidate must be at least 18 years old. No other LPG connections are permitted in the same home.
