On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated that India is preparing to introduce a comprehensive framework to promote ethical and people-first use of artificial intelligence (AI).
The upcoming AI Governance Framework, he added, will serve as a global benchmark by combining innovation with safety.
Announcing that India will host the Global AI Summit in February 2026, the Prime Minister asserted that the event will strengthen global collaboration on building inclusive and trustworthy AI systems.
Addressing the Emerging Science, Technology and Innovation Conclave (ESTIC) 2025 at Bharat Mandapam, he further highlighted the profound influence of science and technology and underscored the importance of keeping innovation grounded in ethics and inclusivity.
Using AI as an example, he pointed out its growing role in daily life, from retail operations and logistics to customer engagement and even homework assistance for children.
PM Modi noted that the government’s India AI Mission, with an investment exceeding Rs 10,000 crore, aims to ensure that the benefits of artificial intelligence reach every segment of society.
Key Scientific Challenges
In his keynote speech, the Prime Minister urged the scientific community to explore bold questions, such as:
- Can India develop next-generation biofortified crops to help combat malnutrition globally?
- Can innovations in low-cost soil health enhancers and bio-fertilisers serve as alternatives to chemical inputs and improve soil health?
- Can India better map its genomic diversity to advance personalised medicine and disease prediction?
- Can new and affordable innovations be developed in clean energy storage, such as batteries?
PM Modi also stressed the need for India to identify critical materials and technologies where it relies on imports and to work towards strategic self-reliance in those sectors.
Expressing confidence in the nation’s scientific talent, he said researchers will go beyond the challenges posed and uncover new opportunities for discovery.
The Prime Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to backing innovation with strong financial support and wider access to research opportunities.
Concluding his address, he further called for a collective roadmap to emerge from the Conclave, expressing faith that the discussions would take India’s scientific and technological progress to unprecedented levels.
