Three FICN dealers were apprehended by the Special Task Force of Assam police on Tuesday in the Goalpara district as part of a significant crackdown on fake Indian currency notes (FICN).
The three people who were taken into custody have been named as Md. Anowar Hussain (age 52), Md. Rafique Ahmed (age 47), and Md. Krowel Marak (age 35). They are all from the Goalpara district’s Krishnai region. The Assam Police responded to information on a FICN deal given by chief of state STF Partha Sarathi Mahanta.
“An operation was launched and the STF team proceeded from Guwahati on Tuesday morning and at 1 pm the team intercepted a Maruti Alto Vehicle bearing registration no. (AS 18 F 6863) at Krishnai town and successfully apprehended three FICN dealers,” said a statement from the Assam Police.
It further added, “During the search operation, 29 bundles of FICN of 500 denominations were recovered from the vehicle. The FICN, the vehicle and four numbers of mobile handsets have been recovered and seized from their possession. All the apprehended people and seized items were handed over to the officer in charge of Krishnai Police Station for initiating necessary legal action and, hence, a case has been registered at Krishnai Police Station for carrying out further investigation”.
The Center and Bangladesh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) earlier in 2015 to combat the distribution and smuggling of fake currency notes. A Joint Task Force has also been established between India and Bangladesh to address the difficulties that both nations share with circulation and smuggling of fake currency.
While West Bengal reported the largest number of cases using fake currency in India in 2021 with 82 cases, Tamil Nadu was at second spot with 62 cases. India reported 639 instances of fake bank and currency notes overall in 2021.
