Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, declared on Sunday that his government will re-lauch its fight against child marriage in the state.
Himanta Biswa Sarma made the announcement during the closing session of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) women’s wing national executive conference, he said that Assam police will detain between 2000 and 3,000 men in the state in the upcoming next 10 days as part of the ongoing campaign against child marriage.
Himanta Biswa Sarma also stated that he was waiting to relaunch the campaign against child marriage when the G20 Summit was over.
“Six months ago, I detained 5,000 people in Assam for child marriage. I awaited the conclusion of the G20. Now that child marriage must be eradicated, I will arrest 2,000–3,000 people for it over the course of the next ten days,” he stated.
“There is a law that this should not happen. And if it continues to happen, daughters from a particular group will never progress. They will keep on getting exploited,” Himanta Biswa Sarma continued.
“But I believe that by ending (triple) talaq, child marriage, and polygamy, the amount of work that we are doing for the Muslims, no Congress government has done before had done it before,” Sarma furhter added.
Assam Police made at least 2,666 arrests in February 2023 in connection with incidents involving child marriages in Assam.
Child marriage is banned in India under the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act, 2006. Additionally, it protects and aids those who have been married off as children.
