On 16 May 2014, India witnessed a political transformation. The results of the 16th Lok Sabha elections ushered in a new era under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), leading the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), swept to power with a decisive mandate, unseating the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) after a decade in office.
The 2014 general elections, held in nine phases from 7 April to 12 May, recorded an unprecedented voter turnout.
The BJP secured 282 seats out of 543 — an outright majority not achieved by any party since 1984.
Voters clearly endorsed Modi’s message of governance, development, and strong leadership.
Modi Takes Office, Parliament Begins Anew
Narendra Modi assumed office as India’s 14th Prime Minister on 26 May 2014. The 16th Lok Sabha held its first session between 4 and 11 June.
Senior Congress leader Kamal Nath served as the pro-tem Speaker, presiding over the election of Speaker Sumitra Mahajan on 6 June.
M Thambidurai of the AIADMK became Deputy Speaker on 13 August.
No Official Opposition, A Changing Political Landscape
The BJP’s landslide win reshaped parliamentary dynamics. No party met the 10% seat threshold required for recognition as the official Opposition.

The Congress, with only 44 seats, fell far short of the 55-seat mark. The AIADMK emerged as the third-largest party with 37 seats.
Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge led the party in the Lok Sabha.
A Mandate For Transformation
The 2014 mandate represented more than just a call for change; it was a vote of hope for national resurgence and economic revival.
Since then, PM Modi has steered India through transformative policy reforms and positioned the country as an assertive global force.
Under his leadership, India overtook the UK to become the world’s fifth-largest economy.
2019: A Stronger Mandate
In 2019, the BJP-led NDA returned to power with 303 seats, reaffirming public trust in Modi’s governance.
His second term saw sweeping reforms, including the abrogation of Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir, enactment of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), and a robust response to the Covid-19 pandemic through vaccination drives and the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.
2024: Third Consecutive Victory
The BJP-led alliance secured another majority in 2024, giving Modi a third term—an achievement matched only by Jawaharlal Nehru.
Observers view this sustained electoral success as a clear endorsement of his governance model and national vision.
Strong Stance On National Security
PM Modi’s tenure has also been defined by a firm response to terrorism.
Following attacks in Uri (2016), Pulwama (2019), and Pahalgam (2025), India launched targeted strikes in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
These bold responses underlined Modi’s declaration of a “new India” that retaliates decisively against threats.
Breaking Policy Paralysis
Unlike the UPA’s later years, which critics labelled as indecisive, Modi’s government has pushed forward with confidence.
From economic restructuring and legal reforms to infrastructure and welfare delivery, his administration has aimed to end vote-bank politics and promote inclusive development with measurable results.
Vision For Viksit Bharat by 2047
Looking ahead, PM Modi has outlined an ambitious national roadmap. By 2028, he aims to make India the world’s third-largest economy.
His broader vision—Viksit Bharat 2047—envisions a fully developed India by the centenary of independence.
Key initiatives focus on infrastructure, job creation, manufacturing, digital connectivity, and ease of doing business.
A Global Voice With Assertive Diplomacy
On the international front, Modi has elevated India’s global stature.
From leading G20 negotiations to advancing digital public goods and climate leadership, India now plays a prominent role in shaping global agendas.
Modi’s assertive diplomacy has strengthened India’s influence, especially across the Global South.
A Defining Decade, A Confident Future
From 16 May 2014 to today, India has experienced a decade of political stability, reform, and ambition.
Under Modi’s leadership, the nation has embraced innovation, infrastructure, and inclusion, positioning itself as a rising global power.
As India enters the next phase, Viksit Bharat 2047 represents not just an economic goal but a national transformation across education, healthcare, defence, and technology.
With clarity of purpose and continuity in leadership, India stands poised for a bold and confident future.
