Cybercriminals send SMS stating that recipients have pending packages and must urgently update addresses through fake URLs such as indiapost-gov-in. one, aiming to collect sensitive data for fraud.
India Post clarified that its official policy does not require customers to provide personal details through unsolicited SMS.

The organisation updates customers only through verified channels, including the official indiapost.gov.in website or the India Post mobile application.
Any request for personal or banking information through unverified links is a scam and should be ignored immediately.
Cybersecurity experts note that these phishing attempts exploit India’s booming e-commerce sector.
With millions of packages delivered daily, scammers take advantage of customers’ trust in online shopping and postal notifications.
They often create URLs that closely resemble official websites, making it difficult for the average user to identify the fraud.
Statistics reveal India recorded 2.27 million cyber incidents in 2024, causing financial losses of Rs 22,845 crore.
Phishing attacks, especially those on postal customers, are major contributors. The government stresses remaining alert and avoiding urgent suspicious requests.
Authorities recommend that recipients of potential phishing SMS verify messages independently before taking action.
People must use official websites or directly consult customer service.
They should report any suspicious messages without delay to 1930, the government’s cyber helpline, aiding authorities in stopping phishing attacks.
Experts underline that being cautious and informed forms the frontline against cybercrime.
India Post and related agencies urge citizens to ignore urgent prompts, confirm links, and avoid suspicious URLs to protect sensitive information.
By staying alert and reporting phishing attempts, customers can safeguard themselves and contribute to a safer digital ecosystem in India.
