A claim suggesting that India admitted to its S-400 air defence system being damaged by Pakistan went viral on social media on Friday.
Several pro-Pakistan handles circulated posts alleging that the advanced Russian-made defence system, recently inducted into India’s strategic arsenal, had suffered damage.
The claims quickly gained traction online, accompanied by images that purported to show the destroyed system.
Here’s a modified version of the sub-header:
The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check unit intervened and categorically dismissed the rumours.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), the official handle wrote: “Reports of destruction or any damage to an S-400 system are false & baseless.”
The clarification came after the misinformation began to spread widely across platforms, raising unnecessary speculation about India’s defence capabilities.
The PIB also clarified the origin of the image attached to the misleading posts.
The agency clarified that the photograph showed a Victory Parade in Russia in May 2010, not a damaged Indian system.
The picture has no connection to India’s armed forces or current operations.
The agency urged users to be cautious and not fall prey to false narratives, especially on sensitive matters related to national security. It emphasised the importance of verifying claims through official sources before sharing them further.
India signed a multi-billion-dollar deal with Russia to procure the S-400 Triumf air defence system, one of the most advanced surface-to-air missile platforms in the world.
The system is capable of intercepting and destroying a wide range of aerial threats, including aircraft, drones, and ballistic missiles, at long ranges. Given its strategic significance, any false claim about the system’s status can create unnecessary alarm.
By quickly countering the misinformation, PIB’s clarification sought to reassure citizens that India’s defence assets remain secure and fully operational.
