The Press Information Bureau (PIB) has flagged a digitally altered video circulating on Facebook that falsely claims Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is promoting a government-backed investment platform.
The video, embedded within a Facebook advertisement, asserts that individuals can earn ₹15 lakh per month by investing just ₹21,000, a claim the government has categorically denied.
According to the PIB Fact Check team, the video is fabricated and has no connection to any official announcement from the Finance Ministry or the Government of India. “Neither the Finance Minister has made ANY such announcement, nor has the Government of India launched any such scheme,” the agency clarified on X.
Officials have warned citizens against falling prey to such online investment scams, which often use manipulated videos and fake endorsements from public figures to gain credibility.
Fraudsters design these schemes to steal personal data and money from unsuspecting users.
The PIB advised people to verify claims before believing or sharing them online. “Always cross-check such claims with official sources before believing or sharing them,” the agency said, reminding users that authentic information is available through verified handles and official portals.
Creators of deepfake content are increasingly using it to spread financial misinformation. Authorities have repeatedly warned that scammers exploit public trust by impersonating well-known figures to push fake schemes.
The government has reiterated its commitment to combat misinformation through initiatives like PIB Fact Check, which regularly debunks viral fake news and issues alerts on emerging digital frauds.
The advisory concluded with a strong reminder: “Stay alert. Stay informed. Don’t let digital scams profit from your trust!”
