Indian equity markets, the Sensex and Nifty, closed lower on Wednesday as investors adopted a cautious stance while assessing a mix of domestic and international factors.
The Sensex lost 183.15 points, equivalent to 0.24 per cent, and ended the session at 77,472.94. The Nifty50 dropped 126.80 points, or 0.52 per cent, to finish at 24,207.75.
Selling pressure across information technology, FMCG and automobile shares contributed significantly to the market’s decline.
Technical analysts identified 24,400 as an important hurdle for the Nifty in the near term.
A decisive move above this level could improve the index’s technical outlook and open the path towards 24,500–24,600.
Until the benchmark crosses that barrier convincingly, analysts expect sellers to remain active at higher levels.
The 24,200 mark now provides immediate support, while the 24,100–24,000 range offers a stronger cushion.
A sustained move below 24,150 could trigger additional selling and push the index towards the psychological 24,000 mark.
Bharti Airtel, Power Grid Corporation of India and Infosys featured among the leading decliners within the Nifty pack.
Information technology shares suffered the steepest losses among the major sectoral indices.
FMCG, automobile and real estate stocks ended under pressure. Several sectors managed to resist the broader downward trend.
Metal stocks recorded gains, while private banking and cement shares delivered comparatively stronger performances. Trading across the broader market remained uneven.
The Nifty MidCap index slipped 0.1 per cent, whereas the Nifty SmallCap index advanced 0.81 per cent. This divergence indicated selective buying interest despite weakness in the headline indices.
Investors will closely watch Nvidia’s earnings announcement and upcoming US inflation figures for signals regarding technology valuations, interest-rate expectations and global risk sentiment.
Developments in West Asia will remain significant for financial markets.
Any escalation in the region could influence crude oil prices and subsequently affect inflation expectations.
With several important global events approaching, market participants are likely to remain selective and closely monitor fresh economic and geopolitical signals.
