Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday praised villagers in Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal district for reviving the Heval River through collective efforts.
Addressing the 139th episode of his monthly radio programme ‘Mann Ki Baat’, he also urged people across the country to maintain cleanliness and protect natural water sources.
PM Modi said respect for nature and responsibility towards the environment had been integral to India’s traditions for generations. He welcomed the growing awareness among communities about keeping their surroundings clean and conserving water.
Highlighting the efforts in Uttarakhand, the Prime Minister said water levels in the Heval River had declined several years ago, while nearby natural water sources had also begun drying up. Local villagers joined hands with the administration to launch a campaign to restore the river.
The initiative focused on rainwater conservation, improving water absorption into the ground and planting large numbers of saplings. These measures helped revive the Heval River and restore dozens of natural water sources in the region, PM Modi said.
He described the achievement as an example of how communities could bring meaningful environmental change through shared responsibility and sustained efforts.
The Prime Minister also linked collective environmental action with the spirit of unity seen during Indian festivals. He said people could achieve significant results when they worked together towards a common goal.
PM Modi urged citizens to keep their surroundings clean ahead of Diwali and Chhath, stressing that small efforts can bring significant change.
He said the Heval River’s revival showed how collective action could protect natural resources.
