Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to inaugurate the Grand International Exposition of Sacred Piprahwa Relics associated with Lord Buddha at the Rai Pithora Cultural Complex in Delhi on Saturday, 3rd January.
Announcing the event on X, the Prime Minister described it as a landmark occasion for enthusiasts of history, culture, and the teachings of Bhagwan Buddha.

The exhibition, titled ‘The Light & the Lotus: Relics of the Awakened One’, brings together Piprahwa relics repatriated after more than a century alongside authentic relics and archaeological artefacts preserved at the National Museum, New Delhi, and the Indian Museum, Kolkata.
Archaeologists discovered the Piprahwa relics in 1898; they rank among the earliest deposits directly linked to Bhagwan Buddha, and historians associate the site with ancient Kapilavastu, where Buddha spent his early life.
Celebrating India’s Buddhist Heritage
According to official sources, the exposition underscores India’s longstanding civilisational connection to Buddhist teachings and reflects the government’s commitment to preserving and promoting the country’s spiritual and cultural legacy.
The government, in collaboration with institutions and through innovative public–private partnerships, recently repatriated the relics.
Thematically organised, the exhibition features a reconstructed model inspired by the Sanchi Stupa, serving as the central focus for the collection.
Key sections include Piprahwa Revisited, Vignettes of the Life of Buddha, Intangible in the Tangible: The Aesthetic Language of Buddhist Teachings, Expansion of Buddhist Art and Ideals Beyond Borders, and Repatriation of Cultural Artefacts: The Continuing Endeavour.
Visitors can also engage with an extensive audio-visual experience, including immersive films, digital reconstructions, interpretive projections, and multimedia presentations.
These interactive elements provide accessible insights into the life of Bhagwan Buddha, the discovery and journey of the Piprahwa relics, and the artistic traditions inspired by his teachings.
Scholars, history enthusiasts, and the general public will attend the exposition, engaging with India’s rich Buddhist heritage and celebrating the successful return of culturally significant relics.
